If you follow the 9rules blog you may have heard about The Diet Contest that Colin D. Devroe has started, it’s a wonderful idea to be part of an online group that decided to have healthier bodies and be in shape again, specially that we as computer professionals in general get more extra weight by sitting behind the computer all day long without any exercise.
I think I’m the most over-weighted among others in the group and the one who have to lose more as well, I have over 30KG (66 pounds) extra weight that I had put in the last three years (almost 10KG a year) and now I have to loose them and get back in shape, I’m sure this won’t happen in a week or even a month, it requires months to get over it, but I also believe that I can do it.
It’s not a matter of dieting only, the concept is in the life change that what I should follow, I love food, ice cream, chocolate and all these stuff, but at the end I’m not burning what I’m getting. After school and college days I’m not walking or exercising any more, but I’m still eating the same amount I used to eat then and maybe more, so the first part of my plan is to change my life, understand the concept that I have to burn exactly as much as I get.
After I finished reading John Walker’s The Hacker’s Diet online book a week ago I started my dieting mission, the concept of dieting as a hacker really convinced me:
“This is precisely what losing weight involves. If you’re successful in the things that matter to you but overweight, all you need to lose that weight is to make accomplishing your weight and health goals matter just as much, then approach weight loss and control just like any other important project: by developing and carrying out a rational plan for success based on an understanding of what’s involved in achieving it.” The Hacker’s Diet - Introduction.
As a developer who work to solve problems, and do algorithms for everything in life, it should be easy to have such a will and believe that I can control my weight too, I think it’s just that I didn’t pay enough attention to this side before and now is the time.
Colin and others has posted their photos in The Diet Pool on Flickr, I don’t think I have enough courage to do this, but at least I can give my information to start logging my diet online, having this feeling that my weight is available for the public will motivate me more to change and lose weight faster, and become a natural person.
Current weight: 102KG =~ 224.8 pounds
Target weight: 75KG =~ 165 pounds
Height: 175cm =~ 5 feet 9 inches
Current BMI: 33.3
Target BMI: 24.5
If you think you are overweighed and you’d like to join us, signup by commenting to Colin’s Diet Post and he will take care of the rest, we started yesterday May 30th, and I’m not sure if the signup is still open though. Good luck for you, and wish me the same…

First of all, of course the sign up is still open. We’ll be taking people in as long as people want to be a part of what we’re doing. That’s the great thing about doing what we’re doing, it’s easier to accomplish common goals with a community of support.
From what I’ve read of all those participating you do have the biggest goals. That’s extremely commendable though. I applaud you for challenging yourself that much. We’re all in this together and whatever help we can give we will give.

Thank you Mike for your support, and thanks to all the group members as well.
I have to admit that after I joined the community, I really got a better motive and a stronger will, so hopefully I’ll be able to achieve these goals better.
I’ll be posting updates on weekly basis to have a better log and share it with the others in the group.

[...] One week has passed since I’ve started the diet mission, and almost two weeks since I’ve started my dieting in general, my results are going very well so far, and I’m very pleased and motivated, I have lost 5 KGs in the last 15 days, two of them since I’ve joined the contest. [...]

This is good. I’d like to join in after the 1st of the year.
One thing that is overlooked alot, dealing with ‘weight loss’ is the difference between ‘weight loss’ and ‘fat loss’.
I have some articles on my site you may be interested in.
Best of luck,

Hi!
I need to lose weight, there I said it. I’d love to start a weekly motivation group with the goal of documenting our weight loss.
I was thinking we could do one layout a week with different weight loss topics.
The first topic is:
Title Page with a current picture and your current weight and goal weight (you may want to blur these before posting online.) I plan on printing this one and putting it on my bathroom mirror, although the fridge would be a better place!
Who else is on board with me???
A couple more things, we need to figure out a night for a weekly motivation chat AND I’d love to have a nifty little name for us like:
PAW- Pound a Week
CHEESE- Choose Health Exercise Eating Sensible Everyday
I’m sure you can come up with something better!
Thanks

I really need to lose weight. In fact both me and my sposue need to lose 15 kgs each. We started yesterday and have kept a weekly target of 1 kg each per week. We skipped dinner and did brisk walking for about 1/2 hour. I really need to keep this going.

Just a day late and a dollar short…typical for me I guess. Just found your blog and this post. Can yu tell me if there will be another mission this year? I have finally gotten to where I need to lose a minimum of 70 pounds. I don’t want to wste a lot of time and money on silly diet pills and I am still not convinced which of the diet plans are really effective. I would just like to get on board with a good diet plan that will allow me to use ‘normal’ food and eat like a normal working person…just more sensibly.
Anyone have any suggestions?
